Dragonball Z TV Blu-rays are being worked on (or at least in the higher side of planning stages, I’m not 100% sure on that). Beyond that, I know nothing (minus a hint of maybe a pack in exclusive at Best Buy, but not sure about that).

Hehe, if it's true then Mike did a helluva prediction on the podcast. I myself don't/would't think they'd be bringing it out on Blu-ray this year or even announce that they are working on it.

It's going to be very interesting to see what FUNimation does with these, a lot of the problems with their "remaster" are clearly visible at standard def, I can only imagine the amount of problems we're going to see at 1080p.

Maybe they will remaster their remasters, y'know draw the lines back on Nappa's face.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if these end up being decent, full screen proper releases. I'll keep on laughing until I cry, looking at my dvd season sets. Then again, the price on these will probably be out of my range anyway.

No way in hell that's gonna' happen, FUNimation cropped they're masters, so the only way it'll be in full screen is if they purchase new footage from TOEI.

Incorrect, FUNimation telecined the fullscreen film masters they purchased from Toei up to 1080p creating a new masters, it's not like they took to the ones they bought from Toei with scissors, they've still got them somewhere.

You can't crop a film master from the top and bottom. They made a new print from the originals. It might even be entirely digital.

They cropped their HD masters that were created for the season sets, not the actual film masters. Its entirely possible for them to do a full screen release.

EDIT: Third time isn't the charm. :P

Curse my in-ability to explain things. You've pretty much explained what I was trying to say. :)

Amazon

It was slated for a February release on Amazon before but no doubt it's been moved waaaaaaaay down.

Hm...at least if it hits Blu-ray, people will stop hiding behind the "lawl is bad downscale" excuse for the "Vegeta Bukkake Syndrome (VBS)."

What would be the point in doing the Season sets on regular DVD, then turn around, and make them on Blu-Ray? I am just going to finish buying the Season sets and call it a day.

I guess the same reason they're rereleased on DVD after they finished with VHS.

I'm not counting on these being anything more than high-def releases of the same stuff that's on the orange bricks. Until I hear otherwise, I'm not getting involved. Give me something at least as good as what Spain has and we'll talk.

Err, the same reason everything else was released on DVD and then Blu-ray? Problem is, most other releases show marked improvement in HD, whereas DVNR'd DragonBall will most certainly look worse.

I try. ;p

The thing that bugs me the most about this is that the more ways FUNimation releases the series in a format that is not using the Dragon Box footage (especially when it is with stuff as pricy as Blu-Ray), the longer we'll have to wait to ever have a chance of getting the Dragon Box footage. Not to mention that the longer they take, the less likely Dragon Box footage becomes due to its age and aspect ratio, not just the amount of previously released formats.

I wouldn't say that. Competent studios are releasing material from decades ago in proper aspect ratio, age has nothing to do with it. Only hacks like FUNimation (with regards to their DragonBall Z releases) are cropping material and stating that it must be cropped for HD. It's a really, really bad excuse that people bought hook, line and sinker.

It's funny though, people at AnimeonDVD are complaining about the small possibility that a Blu-ray release would be proper, and someone made a very good point (emphasis mine):

Personally I "boycotted" the season sets because they didn't meet my minimum requirements. If they did meet yours, that isn't FUNi's fault. I look forward to FUNi ever maybe doing it right one day.
