Episode #0215 (download MP3) (rss feed)
55:14; 96 kbps, mono; 37.9 MB

Episode #0215! VegettoEX, Meri, and Heath dive in to what little news there was this past week, but spend some extra time dissecting it all and relay stories of fandom past, present, and future. As much as we try to avoid talking about "Kai" so much, it seems we just cannot avoid it. April's jam-packed releases schedule and some great e-mails from you all round out the episode. Referenced sites:

Enjoy the 96 kbps encode these days! Whoa! We left a little bit of news on the table since we recorded Thursday, but we had left some hints of it, so that was interesting to see play out... you'll hear more about it all next week...!

w0rd.

Another filler episode...

I wonder if the podcast will end up like this when Dragon Ball Kai ends and FUNimation completes their releases... or at least when there's nothing new to discuss about a 20+ years old show...!!

--

Anyway... upcoming character episodes... I think you said you'd do an episode about Kami with Jeff.

Well, we know at least your general dislike of the character...!

How about a Pilaf episode? He's a wealthy inventor, that's gotta be worth an hour of laughs!!

Fun episode as usual, I can't wait to see what you thought about Makankôsappô being used. And the retaining of the episode titles. And the Schemmel singing the Dragon Soul~

Sometimes you just need ''simple'' (but in my opinion still very enjoyable) episode like this one.

Oh God, that discussion at the end about the excitement from getting fansub tapes...I'm right there with ya. I remember going to the local Starland and getting copies of tapes, running home and copying them...and the few that actually looked "good" (like the movies, which were sourced from the laserdiscs)...oh lord. So long ago, so far away...

I miss those days. And buying the shitty Ultimate Battle 22 import because I had just chipped my PSX, and it was so bad but so good at the same time...jeez...then getting Final Bout...wow...

So, can I drive up for the filler episode? ;)

-Corey

P.S. - "CHO EXCITED!"

I wonder if the podcast will actually last that long...

Anyway, that was a nice laid-back podcast. I'm guessing you guys aren't super excited about the Uranai book and instantly comprehending your fortunes for the coming year? :P

I remember buying copies second or third gen copies of DBZ movies from folks on the internet and being over the moon with excitement when I finally got them, even though the quality was never great. Sometimes you even got Japanese ads for DBZ merchandise on the tapes.

Yeah, even with the Dragon Boxes I don't plan to let go of my fansubs anytime soon. I love the Japanese commercials too much! I remember the rigamarole I had to go through to get them... ooh, ten years ago now! Getting my mom to get a money order for me to send to a fansubber in Hawaii and then finally have my precious tapes mailed to me a few weeks later. I would always get three tapes each time, always trying to evenly spread out my time among the three series: two DBs and one Z the first time, then two Zs and one GT... and that was the only GT I ended up getting! I guess that practice of mine didn't last for too long. Once the singles came out, and I got a DVD player, I don't think I got any more fansubs after that.

Yes, we get it, you guys want 4:3, the original aspect ratio for Dragon Ball Z. I appreciate that, we all have our own opinions of how we want to view our show. Dragon Ball Kai was aired in 16:9. The cropping was done with the show in mind, making sure it gives us more picture, but keeps all important aspects of the scenes on the screen. The "zoom" feature on HDTVs won't give us this, and we'll basically be getting the same shit as we got on the season sets.
Is it so wrong that some fans want the cropped aspect ratio? Do you need to bring it up, without using such a patronizing tone? It seems Meri was the only one there who actually appreciated other peoples opinions, whilst Mike and Heath were just ranting about how it's amazing that nobody else knew as much as them.

Apart from that, good show. :)

We spoke at length about how it's an education issue (including how some fans, through no fault of their own, simply haven't had a chance to learn anything more about this), and at some point, it's no longer about education and simply about complete and utter ambivalence and/or ignorance.

Why should our products by compromised by someone else's lack of caring? Why should we have to put up with that bullshit? 'Cuz that's what it is: bullshit. If Heath wants to expand upon that (since he's the one you're quoting), that's fine. He's a big boy and can do it.

Do we need to keep bringing it up? As long as it's an issue, yes, yes, yes, a million times, yes.

Also, Meri is not your friend in this conversation. She's full of spite and dislikes your opinions. She also killed your favorite pet. Do not be fooled. I'm mostly serious about that, too. Minus the pet part.

Seems to me that you just don't like that we want the damn show untouched and have a platform to be vocal about it (I get the irony of saying that and it being about Kai, trust me...) and we're not echoing your own opinions back at you.

(Semi-sarcastic but playful newsflash: we have opinions and don't give two shits about sharing them ^_~)

I never even insinuated that Meri was a friend, or anything like that. All I said was that she seemed to actually respect that certain people have opinions, and not everybody knows as much as the average Daizex'er. I hate to use the term, but I guess that things are pretty "elitist" around here, and it's been bugging me lately.

To some degree, I can't understand why there's a pejorative intent with your use of "elitist" in this respect. We actually have cold, hard facts about how the show is being produced. Certain fans are doing as much education as they can for the greater fandom about why and how this is. Some fans haven't had a chance yet to learn about this. No biggie on them. Happy to edjamacate.

The ones that don't give a rat's ass (not you... you're not who we're talking about, which should have been explicitly obvious from the discussion) should hold no weight what-so-ever.

Is that "elitist"? Sure. It damn well is! Forget about those people who don't care and gave us two years of shitty products in the US. It's no longer their time.

Ah yes, "Rawr, fill my screen!" That was in reference to a couple comments I saw on YouTube where people were saying FUNi's release of Kai is utter crap because "it won't fill my screen". That's what they said. I was just mockingly pretending to be them. I'm sorry, but they sounded like morons. They were bitching that the show was now ruined for them because it wasn't in widescreen. I mean, come on, they won't buy a show because it's shown exactly the way it was produced.

Rory wrote:

Yes, it is, because I don't want it. If they put both versions on the discs, then no, it wouldn't be a problem. But I'm not gonna let someone that doesn't care or know any better decide what I'm getting. They already did that for me with the Orange Bricks. And for the record, I don't think you quite got that last sentence right. I think you meant "Do you need to bring it up, while using such a patronizing tone?" Because if I didn't use a patronizing tone, like you said, then I don't think you'd have a problem with it.

Says the guy not actually appreciating other peoples opinions. But seriously, I appreciate other peoples opinions, but I also think most people deserve to be educated about any misinformed opinions they may have.

If you read my original post, you'll find that before I even began my rant, I mentioned I appreciate your opinion as well. :)
I just don't like how you're mocking other peoples.
